Last year, on an anniversary of when I founded the
Kansas City Chapter of the AOG, I invited my original ALO, Col. John
Riffle, to the Founders' Day celebration. John was 95 years old at
the time and I believe was the first Regional Director for the ALOs
in the Kansas-Missouri region when the Academy was first formed. He
introduced me to the Academy in 1958 by inviting me to a Christmas
Party for the first class (1959) of cadets who were home on leave.
Though a young 8th grader, I was sold upon meeting these sharp-looking
young men. Thereafter, the good Colonel told me what I needed to do
in the next four years to get there. The rest was history.
John died last November but his widow gave me his
copy of the 1968 Academy Brochure that we ALOs use today (in different
form, of course) to interest kids into considering an Academy appointment.
I have scanned some of the pages that might be of
interest to our class, especially since some have their pictures.
I was surprised to find that I was seated at the piano in the Chorale
picture that was included. Terry Zubrod was turning pages.
I thought I would share these with the class.
Enjoy.
