Willis Grant Uhls

First Lieutenant Willis G. Uhls distinguished himself by gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force in Southeast Asia on 11 February 1971. On that date, Lieutenant Uhls flew his aircraft under adverse conditions through intensive ground fire in support of free world forces. He continuously flew low passes through heavy and accurate antiaircraft and small arms fire to accurately mark the target, causing heavy damages against the opposing hostile forces positions and targets. Through his personal gallantry and energetic application of his knowledge and skill he significantly furthered the goal of the United States in Southeast Asia. By his gallantry and devotion to duty in the dedication to his service to his country Lieutenant Uhls has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force. Lt. Uhls was killed in his O-1 crash in Laos on 11 February 1971. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart.
