In Memoriam

Colonel Joseph "Jay" William Barnes
20 October 2021

In Memory of Jay (Joseph William) Barnes

Jay passed away at his mother's home in Pittsburgh. He was alone at the time.  The cause of death was a massive heart attack. Because of the circumstances surrounding Jay’s death, the exact time of his passing is unknown, but sometime between October 18-21 is most likely. Memorial plans will be announced at a later date. He is survived by his wife Sue and son Benjamin.

The collage of all these comments paints an ever expanding picture of a colleague, comrade and best of all, quality friend. Jay always had a good word, a story or a laugh to add to any setting.  Once more he precedes many of us by slipping the surly bonds of earth...

Most of the comments that follow are lifted from tributes of 70-01 UPT classmates, but also include AFA ’68 classmates and Jake FAC buddies.

Jay’s character never seemed to change. He was olid and always optimistic. He enjoyed the good times and appeared unprovoked by the bad.

Jay was indeed a leader of 70-01. He and I worked together many times to keep our class fun and communicative.

I think of the Missing Man Table ceremony that Jay always planned to honor POWS, MIAS and the fallen as just one of many fond memories.

He had a heart of gold and only was interested in doing what was right

Jay was one of a kind and irreplaceable for his leadership in 70-01.

He was the spark for all of our reunions and always a leader for getting us together. I know we all crossed paths with him throughout our careers and retirement to be met with his smile, a kind word and a “story”.

Jay was one of Tom’s first friends at Laughlin. Jay saw the lonely Norwegian and I know Tom (Lillejord) appreciated his friendship so much.

We lost a “cheerleader” when Jay passed. He will be missed!!

Today, the sobering sadness sits heavy, but tomorrow may we celebrate his life and contributions.

Jay may be gone, he will not be forgotten.  May he rest in peace.
