In Memoriam

Philip Quentin Dowsing
June 7, 1945 - May 31, 2025

Philip Quentin Dowsing left our surly bonds on May 31st. Born June 1945 and passed a week before his 80th.

High School years as a surfer and wide receiver growing up in Redondo Beach, Calif and playing for South Torrence HS Spartans along with Jan and Dean. At the Academy he majored in Engineering Sciences. Great friend with everyone in 9th Squadron and 23rd especially his inaugural roomie Tim Ayres and eventually Hal Smith always talking about surfing with Rick’s Boards.

Following the Academy, he spent 7 years in USAF through 1975 mostly at El Segundo in Aerospace Systems Command as a Design Engineer through 1984 returned to So. California and Redondo. Working with McDonald Douglas as a Manager of Technical Facilities Laboratories for 7 years. Funding went sideways after the 1st Gulf War and Phil joined the Long Beach Unified School District as Director of Facilities from 1991 through 2000 then upgraded to the LA Unified School District as Director of Facilities and Project Management in the largest school district in the country. We’re talking about real stress levels here through 2010 leading to intermittent coronary issues and real retirement.

Phil married Marie de Arcangelis from Boston in 1987, who was his partner and protector for 38 years. Also, leaving 2 children and 5 beloved grandchildren.

Toughing it out like a true Zoomie and consummate surfer, he finally succumbed to the ultimate stress while in Mission Viejo, but just before passing he was adamant about travelling to San Antonio for a 9th Squadron reunion no matter how impossible, because “that’s what classmates do for each other.                                 (Marie, Phil’s wife, with classmate Frank Palermo)
