We
were just informed of the passing of Greg. Garry and Tina Dudley
received a call from his wife, Marti, this afternoon (Wednesday,
August 25, 2026) informing us that Greg passed away yesterday, very
unexpectedly. She returned home and found him at his desk in his
home office. Greg was my roommate in 8th Sq, our firsty year; I
learned a lot about music that semester! I know you remember his
musical contributions to our reunions. It is our understanding that
he will be buried in Kansas—more
details to follow. Greg was in Cadet Squadrons 13 and 8.

Obituary:
Air Force Lt. Col. (Ret.) Gregory “Greg” Neil Shuey, beloved
father, husband, friend, and patriot passed away suddenly at home
on Tuesday, August 25, 2026 at the age of 80.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Marti Shuey; his three children,
Heather, Brandon, and Trenton (Michelle); his two step-children,
Jonathan Kincaid (Annie), Hannah Lasorsa (Jake), 10 grandchildren:
Caleb, Amber, Brooke, Grace, Wyatt, Ciera, Kylie, Allie, Caroline,
and Emmalynn, his three siblings, Phil (Janet), Doug (Donna), and
Collette (Vince) and two cousins, Scott (Mina) and Teddy Jr. He
was preceded in death by his mother, Anita "June" Smith;
his father, Gilbert "Franklin" Shuey; his brother, Cary
Carr; and his step-son, Thomas Kincaid.
Greg was born at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri,
on February 21, 1946. He grew up in Johnson County, Kansas, graduated
from Shawnee Mission North high school (1964) and from the Air Force
Academy (1968: BS Space Physics). He went on to become a pilot with
nearly 3,000 hours in 13 different aircraft and 350 solo combat
missions in Vietnam. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross,
13 Air Medals, two Vietnamese Crosses of Gallantry, and 13 other
decorations for his combat and military service.
He was a proud patriot, a virtuoso pianist, a talented writer, and
gifted woodworker whose kindness, intelligence, loyalty, and generosity
were clear to everyone who knew him.
Greg served as the President of the Air Force Kansas City Association
of Graduates chapter for many years, ensuring they won the Distinguished
Chapter Award for nearly every year he was president. He was an
Admissions Liaison Officer (ALO) for the United States Air Force
Academy, where he spent 22 years mentoring junior high and high
school students with a keen interest in attending the Air Force
Academy.
He founded, along with others, the Liberty Lions League, where he
worked tirelessly to research and bring awareness to voter fraud
and many other issues.
Many people throughout the country knew Greg by his pen name, Leo
Leonis. He poured his heart into the extensively researched T.O.
newsletter, which he sent two to three times per week with political
updates for more than a decade.
He was the Air Force Director of Engineering for the Space Shuttle
Program (Johnson Space Center) during 14 shuttle launches, Navy
FLTSATCOM Satellite Engineering Manager, A-10 pilot and war planner,
US/KOREA exercise manager, and negotiator for US Forces, Korea.
Greg was a graduate of Arizona State University (Biomechanical Engineering/Astrogeophysics),
Auburn University (Business Administration), Air Command and Staff
College and AirWar College.
He retired from the military in Korea and started his own business
development company and three software companies in the Philippines
and the U.S.
Greg’s visitation will be at McGilley & Hoge Johnson County
Memorial Chapel at 8024 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, Kansas 66204
on Wednesday, September 2nd from 5 to 7 pm.
The funeral will be at Resurrection Brookside at 5144 Oak Street,
Kansas City, MO, 64112 on Thursday, September 3rd at 10 am, officiated
by Pastor Anne Williams. Long-distance friends and family can also

The burial with military honors will immediately follow the funeral
at Mount Moriah Cemetery at 1-435 and Holmes.

Tribute:
I remember the day at Willy when Greg was an FCF pilot for the F-5E.
He was doing a routine fully stick stall. We all knew the T-38 and
F-5 wouldn’t spin but hold on - Greg found himself in and inverted
spin and after exhausting every knowledgeable spin recovery unsucessfully
he punched at 10000’MSL - the terrain in that neighborhood in
northeastern AZ is between 6000 and 8000’ MSL so he waited longer
than he shud have. As expected upon recovery he was sequestered, given
numerous drug tests, grounded and subjected to an FEB.
What was ultimately disclosed an undiscovered to that point was that
E model for maneuverabiltiy and turn performance had been provided
with 5” extra down travel on the tail slab elevator - whoops
- the likely event of a full aft stick stall in the Landing configuration
with gear and full flaps is indeed an unrecoverable inverted spin.
Greg was exonerated completely - he should have been given an oak
leaf on his DFC- he was a fine friend, a savvy and accomplished pilot
