Mike Cassidy

Military:

After I busted out at the end of our 3rd Class year the "Reader's Digest" version goes like this:

• AF Reserves as "2 striper" while attending Rockhurst College, KC Mo. Graduated in 1970 (I was "in-trail" with you all).
• Graduated OTS in 1971
• Graduated Nav school @ Mather AFB in 1972
• Graduated F-4 RTU, in 1973 (WSO)

For flying assignments, I spent most of my career flying F-4 Phantoms.

• Kunsan - ROK, RAF Bentwaters - England, Seymour - Johnson, SC, McConnell AFB, KS.
• Full timer IWSO, for last ½ of my career, AGR program, KANG - RTU). Wound up with 3000hrs + in the F-4.
• Also have a bit over 40hrs in back seat of family-model F-16B. We transitioned to the Viper after the Phantom at the KANG. I was a F-16 sim instructor the last year or so of my military career.
• NOTE: They kept a few of us old guy back seaters on to finish out our last year or two of our 20 years. It was good of them. Over all, I had a great time in the USAF/Guard. 'Flew through most of it and retired as a lieutenant colonel (I know…shocking, ain't it…I can understand why many of you would view this as rather along the lines of a blind squirrel finding an acorn.)

Civilian:

• Just retired from Bombardier-Learjet, Wichita, KS, in Aug 2018, after just under 24 years with them. I was a Flight Test Engineer in their Flight Test Center for most of that time.

Family:

• Married to my wife, Mary Ann, since 1971. Celebrated our 47th anniversary on 7 Aug 18 (yes…she is a saint).
• Son, Ryan, and Daughter, Megan. Both doing fine. Ryan has 3 college degrees, I believe, at last count, but really loves his job as one of the two aviation photographers with Cessna - Beechcraft here in Wichita ('loves flying formation….understandable…).
• Megs is a catalogue web designer with an outfit called 3L in Columbus, OH, (if I got their name right. They own other companies…one of them is Victoria's Secret. I off handedly brought up the subject of a free ticket to their annual runway show with the angel wings, etc., ….was laughed at and immediately told •NO• by both she and her mother….)

Ron Jackson

Military:

Got a masters at NC State through the co-op program immediately after graduation. Then pilot training at Webb. Flew C-7 Caribous at Cam Rahn Bay for a year. Fun airplane to fly. Assigned to a base flight job at Kelly when SAC pipeline overflowed. Involuntarily sent to an AFROTC job at Virginia Tech which turned out to be a great assignment. Then to C-130s at Dyess. Thoroughly enjoyed the flying and seeing the world. ACSC, with a follow on to MAC HQs, where I was the C-17 program manager. Then back to C-130s as an instructor at the school house at Little Rock, up to Squadron Commander. Then a year at AWC, followed by Command of the Basic Military Training School at Lackland, another great assignment. Finished with a couple of years on the AETC staff at Randolph, and retired when offered a Pentagon job.

Civilian:

Started with a private aviation training school and quit when I realized the for-profit education business was ethically challenged, to say the least. Became the Director of a program called DoD Starbase on Kelly Field on Lackland. National program, funded through DoD, doing STEM education for at-risk 5th graders from the area around Lackland. Loved teaching and working with kids, but decided I'd had enough at age 70.

Family:

Married to wife Mary before pilot training. Have three children: daughter Sarah Brown who lives with husband and two granddaughters in the Dallas area, daughter Lisa Reumping who has some high tech consulting job that has taken her all over the world and currently lives in Munich with husband and two grandkids, and son Scott who lives with us. We are permanent residents of the San Antonio area. I think we would freeze if we ever ventured north of Austin.

Personal:

After a lifetime of good health, I lost my right leg to a severe infection (necrotizing fasciitis). Doctors have no idea how I got it. Went to the emergency room at BAMC with what I thought might be an infected bite, and woke up three weeks later with no leg. Very lucky to be alive, not many survive that infection, and I probably wouldn't have if I hadn't been treated at BAMC. I've adapted to using my prosthetic leg and get around pretty good.

Joe Michel

I was born in 1945 at West Point, nine months after my Dad returned from the war flying B-25s in China & nine months after my Mother's brother, Uncle Jim was killed in Germany, & I was baptized in the Cadet Chapel the following week.

My Dad graduated #2 in his 1942 Class at West Point & was All-American tackle along with Robin Olds, the other All-American tackle, and best friends with McDermott. My Father's brother, Uncle Jim, went to West Point & was killed in Korea when my Dad was flying B-26's from Japan.

I grew up in the Air Force & lived in eight different places by the time I got to high school, including Naples, Italy. My father was with the initial cadre, including McDermott, to open up the Air Force Academy at Lowry AFB in Denver in 1954. I graduated from Machebeuf High School in Denver & went to University of Minnesota, enrolled in NROTC, & then entered USAFA Class of 68.

After graduation I went to Pilot Training at Laughlin AFB, Del Rio TX, which coincidently was the same place my Dad went to B-25 school in 1942-43. My 1st assignment was C-130s at Clark AB, PI, & Cam Ranh Bay, RVN from Jan '70 to Dec '71, where I received the DFC & Vietnam Service Medal with 6 campaign stars, which was standard issue for us Herky drivers, or the elite meat in the scrounge lounge as the Army nurses in Nha Trang used to call us.

After Vietnam I was a T-41 instructor pilot at the Academy & then a B-52 pilot at Beale AFB, CA. In 1975 I separated from active duty, met & married the love of my life, Karen, & started my career in Civil Service & AF Reserve at Sacramento ALC, & had two kids. In 1985 I transferred to Space & Naval Warfare Systems Center in San Diego & continued my reserve duty at SM-ALC, which included LOC for AFA & AFROTC in San Diego, & retired from the Air Force in 1998.

Family:

• I've had 2 seminal times in my life: First I married Corinne (Corky) Smith in l970. 48 wonderful years. Secondly, and of principal import, we both became Christians in 1975. Since then, we have been active in our faith in our little country church serving in teaching Sunday School and whatever else needs to be done.

Volunteer:

• Our principal focus is on Pro-Life ministry starting and helping to maintain a local Crisis Pregnancy Center.

Commentary:

• Life has been very good to me. I live where I love to live, walk out the door to go deer hunting, I have always had great access to our lake here to use our sailboat. Too many blessings to recount. My only regret is not being able to graduate with all of you. Looking forward to catching up in October,

Gary R Vasek

USAFA TRANSITION to Cadet & 2nd Lt: Nebraska farm boy with no military background; led to a lot of tours, push-ups and the loss of 26 lbs during basic. CS-07 for first two years; Roommate Armando Castro (Philippines) basic training; Ron Jackson and Mike Thompson as 4th classmen. Firsties Fazio and Navarra recruited me for the squadron boxing team, got a •B• in boxing class, and the rest is history. Believe those first year's experiences gave me the confidence that I could survive and even succeed at USAFA. Marty Cole and Dave Mann roommates 3rd class year. Learned how to study from Marty and that young ladies might be interested in cadets from Dave. Moved on to CS-16 and roommates Entsminger and Edlund and then on to CS-26 for the last year. Got a second opportunity to experience the ZI field trip as the cadet commander; fortunate to serve as Flight commander with Bill Gaunt as roomy and 2nd semester Squadron Commander with Jack Cummings as exec. Many good memories with classmates, roommates, squadron activities.
