(Maurice Ecung's guests) I met Leroy when I was a doolie. An extra tray of steaks mysteriously appeared on my lap, during a Friday evening meal in Mitchell Hall. Thereby allowing all of the doolies at our table to sit at ease and all to enjoy a second Steak. (A rare occurrence back then.) On a later occasion, in Colorado Springs, Leroy saved my life. Leroy Jones was a waiter at the cadet dining hall from 1964 to 1968. He literally, served our class. He and Hazel came to Colorado Spring in 1962, compliments of the U.S. Army. After 2 years as a solder at Fort Carson, he separated from the Army and took the then civil service position as a waiter at Mitchell Hall, the USAFA Cadet Dining Hall. After leaving the Academy in 1968 Mr. Jones earned a degree in Fire Science. He then returned to the USAF Academy as a fire fighter with the USAFA fire department. After one year he was recruited By the Denver Fire Department. Within 8 years he was a Fire Chief. He retired in 1992 as an assistant Battalion Chief. Leroy is 84 years old. He and Hazel currently reside in Aurora Colorado. Antonia and I feel blessed for finally being able to locate them and thank them for their kindness 60 years ago. |
