Minutes, Meeting 2, USAFA Class of '68 40th Reunion Committee 1.
Meeting was called to order by Gene Rose at 1700 on Tuesday, 18 Sep 07 2.
Attendees included Gene Rose, Al Blumberg, Barney Mills, Bob Denny, Carl Janssen,
Rocky Gaines, Steve McPhail, Bob Sallee, Bill Crimmel, Bill Eckert, Cindi Kinder
(AOG, Class of '68 reunion advisor), and Lani Wing (AOG, Class of '63 reunion
advisor) 3. Cindi Kinder went over the draft nominal schedule she had prepared,
based on the decisions the Class of '63 has already made since they are senior
to us. The Committee spent nearly an hour discussing the schedule and proposed
alterations. Key decisions made were as follows: a. Would prefer golf on Friday
morning so will be available to more attendees. AOG will coordinate. b. Class
will pay for the food for the Wed night social. c. A Thursday morning hike/walk
to Cathedral Rock will be added. Gene Rose will schedule a "practice"
for a nice day this fall and let everyone know. d. Al Blumberg agreed to determine
interest in various group activities for Thursday afternoon and facilitate depending
on the interest. e. Thursday and Friday times are 1830-2030 for the social,
with dinner from 1900-2030. f. Chorale will perform on Friday evening for approximately
20 minutes during the social. Grey Shuey is working. Exact time TBD. g. Based
on several inputs, Steve McPhail will look into having our entire Memorial Ceremony
at the Cemetery vice the standard event at the Chapel and the Warrior Tribute
at the flagpole. The issues involve Academy support, inclement weather backup,
and room at the Cemetery. The Committee felt strongly that we should in any case
try to schedule some event at the Cemetery during the reunion so classmates could
see the new facility and honor those from our class who have died. Steve will
follow up thru the AOG with a basic proposal. h. Steve McPhail volunteered
to print nametags with large first names. This will require the AOG to obtain
desired go-by names from all attendees during the on-line registration and Cindi
Kinder said that would be worked. i. We will not schedule a class meeting but
will add at a later date if needed. j. Blair Stewart and Pat McBride were volunteered
to provide music for Friday evening as in the past. k. Dress for the Thursday
dinner will be casual, and Friday will be coat and tie. l. Class will utilize
the Quarterback Club tailgate for both the pre and post game gatherings. Following
that, the rest of Saturday evening will be open for squadron gatherings (if individual
squadrons elect) or individual activities. Class will recommend Quinn's as a good
option since three of our classmates are owners. m. Sunday will have no formal
class activities. n. Cindi Kinder will take all the inputs and coordinate as
needed and then forward Gene Rose an amended schedule for review. Once it is accepted,
Gene will send out an initial letter to all classmates in October with the proposed
schedule attached. Until then, no schedules will be published to avoid any confusion.
4. Gene Rose reviewed subcommittee status: a. Surviving spouses/children:
Carl Janssen will work, no others needed. b. Merchandise: Vince Rusinak (lead)
and Bill Eckert will work c. Golf: Al Blumberg (lead) and Barney Mills will
work. d. Memorial Service (incl Warrior Tribute): Steve McPhail will work
as mentioned previously. Steve will request assistance as needed from the Committee. e.
Food Selection: Bill Sasz will lead. Passed around sign up list for others who
might be interested. f. External Communications: Al Blumberg volunteered to
lead this effort. It includes setting up squadron reps and using them to communicate
to classmates as needed, and responding to comments/suggestions from the class
website (coordination with Pat Russell required). 5. The Committee discussed
the issue of a class gift to the AOG and the response was mild to say the least.
Cindi Kinder said the AOG had a list of definable items that the class might want
to sponsor and would have the list forwarded to Gene Rose. 6. The Committee
had an extended discussion concerning the inclusion of classmates who did not
graduate. This is a sensitive issue, but as a bottom line the Committee felt their
inclusion was the right thing to do, as we did last time. The non-graduates who
attended last time seemed to enjoy themselves and graduate classmates enjoyed
meeting friends from years ago. The AOG will see if the Academy can provide a
list of non-graduate members of the class to Gene Rose. 7. Inputs from Pat
Russell and Bill Wood were reviewed and acted on. Gene Rose will see that both
receive written responses to their inputs. The major items they mentioned have
already been discussed. 8. We will likely not need another meeting until
Jan or Feb next year. At that time, final decisions on schedule, food, and merchandise
will be made following subcommittee reports. 9. Meeting was adjourned after
about an hour and a half. Gene Rose, Committee Chair
