Subject: Potential adverse media coverage

Dear Directors:

The Academy has informed us that tomorrow (17 Feb) the Department of Defense will release the Annual Report on Sexual Harassment and Violence at the Military Service Academies. The report will cover the 2020-2021 academic program year. (Click here to access last year’s report.)

As many of you are already aware, the report gives a robust update on the service academies’ efforts to reduce and prevent sexual harassment and assault on their campuses. It also outlines efforts by the academies to encourage reporting of sexual harassment and sexual assault and ensure victims get the care and support they need. Our Academy, similar to the others, is working hard to address under-reporting.

We do not yet know the specifics of the 2020-2021 report or the data on sexual harassment and violence at our Academy. We do expect significant media coverage of the report based on what we have seen in past years.

Because any official response to the report will be Academy Public Affairs’ responsibility, we will share only Academy statements and messaging on the report with any graduates, donors and others who reach out to the AOG or Foundation about the report. We will ensure we respond to all queries in a timely manner and that those asking questions receive the Academy messaging. We have decided to delay our survey launch until 24 Feb to put some time between the SH&V report and solicitation of graduate attitudes and opinions.

Should you wish to learn more, I have attached a brief background document from the Academy’s communications team.

We will do our best to keep you updated. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mike
